We are keen to encourage young people in Suffolk to consider teaching as a career.  Teaching is one of the most worthwhile jobs you can do.  It is hard work, but extremely rewarding when you see the difference that you can make to the lives of the next generation.

We are offering work experience placements across our schools for young people who are considering becoming teachers in the future.  You will have the chance to work closely with one of our teachers to get to know more about the job they do.  They will become your mentor and will talk to you about routes into teaching.  If you enjoy the experience we will encourage you to continue to keep a link with the school beyond your placement.  This will help support your CV and any applications you might make in the future.  We can offer flexible placements, day release or block placements.

We are looking for young people who:

●        Have predicted grades of 6+ in most subjects especially English and Maths

●        Have an interest in becoming a teacher in the future (either primary or secondary, although this work experience is purely primary)

●        Have a commitment to Higher Education in the future

●        Are reliable, adaptable and willing

●        Develop good relationships and like children!

An enhanced DBS may be required - you are unlikely to be able to work with children if you have a criminal record.  A good reference from your current education provider will also be required.

There is currently a shortage of teachers in our area.  If you follow a teaching career pathway you could have your first teaching job at the age of 22 earning at least £23,000 pa (2018 level).  There are plenty of opportunities for career progression and, with a teaching qualification, you can work in schools all over the world!

During your work experience you will have the chance to shadow the teacher, find out how they plan lessons, work with them to teach and assess the children.   You may be asked to prepare resources and work with individuals or small groups.  You will be expected to read stories aloud to a group or the whole class.  There may be opportunities to experience more than one school, depending on whether you can travel.  With your agreement we will aim to keep in contact with you in the future to either offer more work experience or support you with applications.

ASSET also provides teacher training for graduates in Suffolk, graduate internships and apprenticeships.
