£50 Challenge - Mr Hugh's and Moth in a China Shop

We at Mr.Hugh's are keen to work in the community, helping with education and awareness of health. We are looking to work with schools interested in learning about cooking and nutrition

This is a national schools challenge set out to inspire the entrepreneurial spark within students to come out through innovative business proposals and business plans. We (Mr Hugh’s and Moth in a China Shop) give each group of 4-5 students £50 to use as a start-up capital to create their very own business idea, plus £10 extra to purchase some Mr Hugh’s Rapeseed Oils. We encourage the groups of children to be allowed to run with their business ideas no matter how lavish or large they may seem, after all this is a learning exercise for them and the key to succeeding in a business is learning from your mistakes! We have had tuck shops, car washes, chicken nugget eating competitions, vintage craft sales, cake sales and even a sponsored haircut!

We come to visit the teams and introduce ourselves to them, get to know the businesses and their leaders and offer advice and encouragement towards their ideas. We then return at the end of the challenge to listen to a pitch from each team where they reveal their total of money raised.

Mid Suffolk District Council - Town Planning Activity

Town Planning Activity

This activity is designed to introduce the concept of Town Planning and sustainable growth.  It is a multi-discipline group activity that delivers a real-world example of the way academic skills are combined in employment.

The activity combines a reading comprehension and decision-making exercise, with a creative and enjoyable map-based drawing task.  The outcome is that students analyse information, make and justify decisions based on that information, and present their solutions/proposals in graphic and written format.

This can be delivered either as a half day session or as a project which the group can work on over a period. This could be supported with either drop in or remote mentoring support  and a follow up session at completion

People like me - A new approach to encourage more girls into STEM

People Like Me’ has been developed by WISE to help show girls that people like them find jobs they love using science and maths. The aim is to encourage more girls to stick with science and/or maths Post 16.

‘People Like Me’ approach focuses on using adjectives to describe the attributes of scientists and engineers, allowing girls to recognise that these are attributes that they themselves possess. By doing this, girls have the opportunity to imagine themselves in a STEM career and learn despite their previous thoughts, STEM subjects are for people like them.   The session involves Quizzes, Job Role Analysis and case studies of role model
